Wind Power
Is Off-Grid Wind Power Practical for You?
Off-grid wind power systems are suitable for very windy areas with limited sunlight. The payback is best in the Scottish Islands, while in most of England, Wales and central Scotland solar panels typically produce a better return on investment.
Ideal Conditions for Off-Grid Wind Power Systems
- Average annual wind speed of at least 4.0 meters per second (9 miles per hour); ideally significantly higher;
- Grid access is unavailable or prohibitively expensive; these products are not suited for sites with access to mains power and can't be connected to the same sockets supplied from the grid; and
- Willingness to manage the intermittent nature of wind power.
Small "Hybrid" Wind and Solar Systems
Hybrid wind and solar power systems combine the benefits of both technologies. In the UK, wind speeds are usually low in summer when sunlight is plentiful, and high in winter when sunlight is scarce. Since wind and solar systems peak at different times of the day and year, this cadence makes hybrid systems more efficient, generating power almost continuously.
